Swimming Pools:Keeping Your Kids Safe
Do you know how to keep your kids safe?
Surround in-ground and above-ground pools with a fence or other barrier.
The NH State Residential Building Code states that any pool with more than 24 inches of water has to have a four-foot fence or other barrier around it, even above ground soft pools. All gates in the fence must be self-closing and self-latching.
Because the state building code is enforceable in every NH community, even if your town had not adopted the code or doesn’t have a building inspector, all pools must have an enclosure or barrier to prevent unauthorized entry. In every NH community you are required to meet the code’s pool barrier requirements even if your town does not require permits. It is your responsibility to contact the local code official.
Provide close, constant, and capable adult supervision.
Whenever infants and toddlers are in or around water, be it a pool or an open body of water, a supervising adult with swimming skills must be in the water, within arm’s length, providing touch supervision. Those supervising should know CPR and be able to call for help.
Other considerations:
- Building permit requirements (community dependent)
- Electrical clearances
- Insurance policies

NSP and Subaru Create Safety Handout – The NSP Safety Team and Subaru have teamed up to create a Safety Handout available to all patrols. The 3×3 (trail map size) piece includes info on defensive skiing and riding, as well as defensive driving. A safety-related sticker that patrollers can pass out on the mountain will be included. It is a great piece to hand out in the lodge, at the ticket booth or in the lift line. To have the handout and stickers mailed to your patrol contact Jeri Boswell at the NSP at 303.988.1111. There will be a small shipping charge.
Ski Specific Exercise – Remember everyone, now is not too late to start specific ski related exercises. Check on line for good conditioning exercises or contact you local Orthopedic office or Physical Therapy Office.
Good safety information came out of the NSAA Fall Forum at Mt. Washington. Most important is Documentation. It could be years before a law suite gets to court. You will be asked to produce such seemingly unimportant information as:
- The working on the back of the injured persons ski ticket
- Trail report for that day
- Weather conditions
- Who opened the trail that day and what was done to it up to the time of the incident
- Names of all witnesses and contact information such as a copy of their drivers license.
- Pictures of trail signs and loading and unloading signs for the lift or lifts the injured may have taken.
- Remember a person has two years after reaching their 18th birthday to bring suite. Does your patrol keep records that go back 16 or more years? (for an injured 4 year old)
This is just a short list, talk with your risk manager about other things your insurance company might suggest. Remember if it isn’t written down and legible, it did not happen.
